Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia – 13 June 2023 - UNFPA Mongolia celebrates the successful conclusion of the "Combatting Gender-based Violence in Mongolia" project, implemented in collaboration with the Government of Mongolia and with generous support from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.
The "Combatting Gender-based Violence in Mongolia" project has achieved remarkable milestones in addressing gender-based violence in Mongolia. The project focused on building prevention and response capacities at the national, local and primary levels.
Advocacy and capacity-building efforts of this project contributed to the revision and implementation of key legislations promoting gender equality and criminalising domestic violence, such as the Law to Combat Domestic Violence and Law on Ensuring Gender Equality in Mongolia.
Multisectoral response mechanisms related to fighting gender-based violence are institutionalised and sustained, providing comprehensive support for survivors of violence. Data collection and analysis have been improved, enhancing understanding of the issue and informing evidence-based interventions.
Community engagement has been vital in raising public awareness and promoting gender-equitable social norms throughout the project implementation period. Grassroots initiatives in high-prevalence areas contributed to lasting change, challenging harmful gender stereotypes and behaviours.
The impact of the project has been recognised nationally and internationally. The 2017 national Gender-based Violence prevalence survey provided crucial insights into the prevalence and effects of gender-based violence in Mongolia. An integrated database system was established to monitor and evaluate gender-based violence cases.
As part of the project, 33 standard operating procedures were developed to strengthen the implementation of the Law to Combat Domestic Violence at various levels.
As the "Combatting Gender-based Violence in Mongolia" project concludes, UNFPA reaffirms its commitment to continue working towards a violence-free future for all individuals in Mongolia. UNFPA recognises that the fight against gender-based violence is ongoing and remains steadfast in its dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of women and girls.
UNFPA in Mongolia
UNFPA Mongolia began supporting the Government of Mongolia in the late 1970s providing equipment and training to the Central Statistics Office to undertake the Population and Housing Census of 1979 – and again in 1989. Support for maternal and child health began in the early 1990s and included training for medical personnel and the provision of modern contraceptives.
The first comprehensive Country Programme between the Government of Mongolia and UNFPA officially started in 1992. It focused on the delivery of family planning services and information, and the promotion of population data usage to support the government’s development policies and programmes.
UNFPA’s 7th Country Programme in Mongolia started on 1 January 2023 for a period of five years and it focuses on strengthening national and subnational policies and programs to ensure access to high-quality sexual and reproductive health services for marginalized groups; promoting gender equality and women's empowerment through evidence-based policies; enhancing the prevention and response to gender-based violence with a focus on marginalized populations; increasing access to comprehensive sexuality education and skills development for young people; and utilizing disaggregated data and demographic analyses for the development of inclusive and equitable policies and plans that respond to population dynamics and megatrends.
