8 February 2023 – Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia – UNFPA Mongolia and the Parliament Secretariat of Mongolia signed a vital partnership agreement on 8 February 2023 to support the implementation of UNFPA Mongolia's 7th Country Programme 2023-2027.  The General Secretary of the Parliament of Mongolia Dr. L.Ulziisaikhan and the Head of Office of UNFPA Mongolia, Dr. Khalid Sharifi, signed the Implementing Partner Agreement.

The partnership focuses on advancing the goals of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) and the Mongolia Nairobi Commitments 2019

The parties exchanged their views on working together to strengthen the regulatory framework to ensure that the most needed: people with disabilities, women, youth, and people living in rural areas, receive quality services and support in areas of sexual and reproductive health, in education and social and economic development.

UNFPA Mongolia and the Parliament Secretariat will collaborate to ensure the relevant laws and regulations for population and development, sexual and reproductive health, adolescent and youth, gender equality, and prevention and response to gender-based violence are updated and responsive to the current need of people.

The collaboration of Parliament and UNFPA during the 6th Country Programme 2017-2022 has already led to the creation of the Mongolia Nairobi Commitments in 2019, which aim to reduce maternal mortality to 15 per 100,000 live births by 2030, ensure the availability of modern contraceptives at the service delivery points, reduce gender-based violence, ensure quality comprehensive sexuality education, and reduce unemployment.

UNFPA in Mongolia

UNFPA Mongolia began supporting the Government of Mongolia in the late 1970s providing equipment and training to the Central Statistics Office to undertake the Population and Housing Census of 1979 – and again in 1989. Support for maternal and child health began in the early 1990s and included training for medical personnel and the provision of modern contraceptives.

The first comprehensive Country Programme between the Government of Mongolia and UNFPA officially started in 1992. It focused on delivering family planning services and information and promoting population data usage to support the government’s development policies and programmes.

UNFPA Mongolia’s 7th Country Programme for 2023-2027 focuses on promoting access to sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights, gender equality, preventing and responding to gender-based violence, empowering young people, and utilizing high-quality data and demographic analysis in Mongolia.
