Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia – 5 May 2022 – National Consultative Meeting “100 years of progress” of midwifery was held in Ulaanbaatar today, on 5 May 2022, International Day of the Midwife. The conference was organized by Mongolian Association of Midwives supported by UNFPA Mongolia, Ministry of Health of Mongolia, and JICA under the theme of celebration for 100th anniversary of the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM).

The opening ceremony was attended by Mr. S.Enkhbold, Minister of Health, Ms. B.Saranchimeg and Mr. J.Chinburen, Members of Parliament, Dr. Khalid Sharifi, Head of Office of UNFPA Mongolia, Ms. S.Davaasuren, President of Mongolian Association of Midwives. Congratulatory video messages were delivered by Ms. Franka Cadee, President of ICM, and Mr. Bjorn Anderson, Regional Director of UNPFA Asia Pacific.

The morning session began with a presentation by Dr. Khalid sharing the UNFPA Global Midwifery Strategy 2018-2030 to address the importance of the role of midwives in providing quality maternal and newborn health services in reducing preventable maternal and neonatal mortality, and unmet need for family planning.  

During the afternoon session, a group discussion was held to propose the revisions to the Midwives’ job description in Mongolia on the basis of ICM criteria.
