Ulaanbaatar, 24 September 2024 – In response to the urgent need to address the psychosocial wellbeing of women and girls in Dzud affect areas, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has launched Women and Girls’ Safe Spaces (WGSS)  in high priority provinces of Mongolia. These safe spaces are designed to provide women and girls with secure environments where they can access, receive psychosocial support, and fully exercise their rights.

UNFPA has selected eight sites for the WGSS based on local government commitment and the potential for long-term sustainability. Each safe space has been fully equipped with necessary  equipment and supplies, and staff have been trained in trauma-informed care during a comprehensive three-day workshop held in collaboration with the National Center for Mental Health, Mongolian Red Cross Society, and the National Center Against Violence. These partnerships are crucial to ensuring the success of the WGSS initiative, as they bring together specialized knowledge and local experience.

With the opening and function of these eight sites, It provides evidence to stakeholders to expand this initiative to further needed areas.
