Ulaanbaatar, 20 February 2025 – In a significant step towards reducing preventable maternal and perinatal mortality in Mongolia, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), with funding from the Government of Luxembourg, is establishing a National Family Planning Training Center at the National Center for Maternal and Child Health (NCMCH). This initiative, part of the project "Accelerating Progress Towards Eliminating Preventable Maternal and Perinatal Mortality," aims to train midwives from various soums of several provinces in comprehensive family planning services. The training will encompass counseling techniques and the professional skills necessary for the insertion of intrauterine devices (IUDs) and implants, enabling midwives to offer these services effectively at their respective health facilities.

To support this training, anatomical models, instruments, and supplies valued at $63,000 USD (approximately 216 million MNT) were procured. These essential commodities will be distributed to the NCMCH and selected aimag hospitals, soums, and family health centers involved in the project. The official handover ceremony took place at the Ministry of Health on 20 February 2025.

Organizers:

  • United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Mongolia
  • Ministry of Health, Mongolia
  • National Center for Maternal and Child Health (NCMCH)

Expected Outcome:

MOH officials and the project health institutions will gain a deeper understanding of the contributions made by the Government of Luxembourg and UNFPA’s efforts in addressing the unmet need for family planning in Mongolia. The capacity of the NCMCH, project aimag hospitals, and participating soum and family health centers will be enhanced, enabling them to deliver high-quality family planning services to the population, supported by modern family planning training commodities.
