Naranzaya, a passionate young advocate from Mongolia, shares how the China-Mongolia Youth Capacity Building Programme became a turning point in her journey. Through interactive workshops, cross-cultural dialogue, and hands-on learning, she deepened her understanding of youth leadership, gender equality, and sustainable development. Inspired by the experience, Naranzaya returned home with renewed confidence, a stronger voice, and a commitment to drive positive change in her community. Her story reflects the power of youth engagement and the impact of international collaboration in shaping future leaders.
"Two years ago, I took my first steps as a youth advocate, uncertain but eager to make a difference. Today, looking back at my journey, I realize how far I have come—how far we have come. The China-Mongolia Youth Exchange Programme was a transformational experience that redefined my perspective on youth collaboration and global citizenship. I still remember the moment I was invited to speak at the Climate Change and Youth International Forum in Mongolia in August 2022. It was an exciting yet nerve-wracking experience—stepping out of my comfort zone to speak on an international stage. It was there that I first met youth leaders from China, as we gathered to discuss the role of young people in addressing climate change and advocating for sustainable development. I introduced the UN Youth Advisory Panel (UNYAP) Mongolia and shared our efforts in advancing meaningful youth participation and advocacy. Little did I know that this would be just the beginning of my journey. Fast forward to December 2024, and I found myself on a flight to China for the China-Mongolia Youth Capacity Building Programme, where young leaders from Mongolia, China, and Kenya gathered to share experiences and work towards a common goal: strengthening youth participation and advocacy.
From the moment we arrived in Shanghai at the airport, I felt welcomed. The hospitality of our Chinese peers and the guidance from our student buddies at Shanghai Lida University made us feel at home. The connections we formed went beyond discussions in meeting rooms; they extended to late-night talks, shared meals, and cultural exchanges that deepened our understanding of one another.
The trip also provided a heartwarming reunion. Meeting the Chinese peers who had previously visited Mongolia in 2022 felt like reconnecting with old friends. I was thrilled to see some of the same young leaders I had met in Mongolia. The joy of reuniting with familiar faces made me feel instantly connected, as if no time had passed at all. This was the essence of youth collaboration—not just a one-time meeting, but an ongoing journey of learning and growing together.
One of the most memorable moments was a long conversation with a peer from Kenya on our way to Hangzhou. For two to three hours, we discussed the challenges young people face in our respective countries—issues that, despite geographical distances, were strikingly similar. Whether in Kenya, China, or Mongolia, youth struggle with limited access to sexual and reproductive health education, mental health awareness, and meaningful decision-making opportunities. In that moment, I realized something profound: youth, we speak the same language, even if our native languages are different.
Delivering a speech about UNYAP Mongolia and our efforts in advancing meaningful youth participation was another defining moment for me. Just two years ago, I would have been hesitant to take the stage. Now, I spoke with confidence, driven by the knowledge that our voices mattered. The feedback and encouragement from fellow youth leaders and UNFPA representatives reinforced my belief that youth-led initiatives can shape policies and create tangible impacts.
One of the most impactful experiences during the programme was our visit to the Hangzhou Family Planning Center. The visit was eye opening, as we were introduced to the center’s use of technology and innovation in helping young people plan their future and family. They showcased digital tools and educational platforms designed to provide accessible and interactive information on reproductive health.
What stood out to me the most was their strong focus on peer-to-peer learning. The center actively trains young instructors who then educate their peers, ensuring that the knowledge is passed on in a way that is relatable and effective. Seeing this model in action was remarkable and something that I believe could be adapted in Mongolia. It reinforced the importance of youth-led education and how empowering young people with the right skills can create lasting change in communities.
I am forever grateful to UNFPA for its continued commitment to youth development. The opportunities provided through this exchange programme have not only empowered me but have also reinforced my belief in the power of young people. This programme was designed by youth, with youth, for youth, which made all the difference.
The support from UNFPA country offices, especially UNFPA Mongolia, has been instrumental in my journey. The staff have always been there to guide, mentor, and empower us, ensuring that young people have real opportunities to make an impact. From the very beginning, they welcomed us into the programme design stage, proving that youth development programming is not just about young people. It is led by young people.
On the last evening of the programme, we strolled near the river beside the Shanghai Tower, in the Bund area. The dazzling skyline reflected on the water, creating the perfect setting for one last meaningful conversation. We talked about everything—our experiences during the programme, our aspirations for the future, and the changes we wanted to see in our communities. At that moment, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude. We had come from different countries, yet we were united by the same dreams and hopes. As we looked out at the glowing city, I knew this was a memory I would cherish forever.
As our time in China came to an end, there was no sadness in our goodbyes—because we did not say “goodbye.” Instead, we said, “See you again.” This was not an end, but a new beginning for youth collaboration.
We are not alone in this world. I stand with my international peers, stronger together than we could ever be alone.
This experience laid the foundation for something much bigger than ourselves. A future where youth voices shape policies, where international collaboration thrives, and where we continue to meet, learn, and grow together. I hope to see the youth exchange programme thriving as we move forward.
Therefore, to my friends in China, Kenya, and beyond, I will see you again."
